Press Release: Tuesday 17 June 2008
Sabre Dragons take the Marlow Festival by storm!
On Sunday 15 June, six intrepid Sabre crews took to the Thames at Marlow as part of the annual Dragon Boat Festival. The emphasis on the day was on fun and fancy dress, with prizes for best dressed and best named teams; however, one of the Sabre Trust teams had a secret weapon on board: Georgia Spink, member of the GB Women's Dragon Boat team. Under Georgia's expert tuition the Wilderness Wildcats powered to victory, beating a field of 38 teams, and winning the final which was broadcast live on Marlow FM. Congratulations to the victorious Wilderness Wildcats!
All of the Sabre teams performed brilliantly on the day and scored some very respectable placings for complete novice crews, what's more they were extremely unlucky to miss out on the prizes for best dressed and best named teams. Final standings were:
Wilderness Wildcats - 1st place;
L'Equipe de Nico - 15th place;
Winners Club - 16th place;
The Savvy Strokers - 23rd place;
Blazing Paddles - 31st place; and
Darwin Rhodes, Rhodes, Rhodes your Boat Gently down the Stream - 34th place (but winner of the longest team name!).
All of the crews who took part were also raising funds to support the Sabre Trust's kindergarten building programme in Ghana, and collectively have raised a phenomenal £6,866.14, enough to completely build a new kindergarten school in the KEEA district where the Sabre Trust works. Thank you to everyone who so generously donated, and thank you to the crew members who secured the sponsorship and ensured an excellent day out for everyone involved. The team fundraising pages are still open for donations, so if you would like to sponsor a team, please click on one of the links below:
