Literacy Teaching

Overview:

Volunteers who join this programme will have the chance to live and work in a rural community in the Central region of Ghana in West Africa. You will be offering much needed support to some of Ghana’s rural communities. During this placement you will be living in a small community run guesthouse, just a few minutes walk from the school, while teaching the local kindergarten and primary schoolchildren.

Working closely with the community leaders, we are developing educational programmes to assist the local children who otherwise may not have the opportunity of a full formal education or who need educational reinforcement. Rural schools seriously lack both staff and resources, and its classrooms are overcrowded and noisy. Volunteers will assist the local teachers and teach in the local schools from Monday to Friday. Each class size can range from 20-30 children, depending on the collective ability or the attention needed by the children.

Your free time:

You can spend your weekends as you wish – either relaxing on the beach, or taking trips to other parts of the country. We would certainly recommend a few days / weeks either side of your project to explore the country properly. Nature has been generous to Ghana and National parks, such as the rainforest of Kakum and Ankasa or the broad savannah of Mole, are havens for indigenous flora and fauna. Tropical landscapes of coastal plains with dramatic backdrops of forested hills, cascading waterfalls and bird sanctuaries characterize this country. The dense rainforests are interrupted occasionally by cocoa farms and bustling villages, towns and cities.
