Sounds Together Programme

This programme has been developed to present the new methodology, simply and engagingly
for the rural Kindergarten One State Schools in Ghana. It aims to integrates a content approach of teaching
English through topics that relate to the Ghana Curriculum for Kindergarten One. The method of instruction within the
content approach combines a synthetic phonic English literacy programme with Total Physical Response teaching techniques.
It requires few resources:
- the blackboard
- children
- bottle tops
- straws
- stones
- and other environmental and realia items

| Some synthetic phonics alphabet sounds are related to actions which are culturally tailored.
First letter alphabet sounds are also associated with pictures: |

First letter sounds are also related to mimes:
- Letter ‘s’ finger air drawing of ‘s’
- Mimes of words beginning with ‘s’
- ‘s’ snake – moving arm like a snake
- ‘s’ sing – pretending to sing
- ‘s’ sit – pretending to sit down
- ‘s’ mimes reinforced with pictures
