There was so much that was needed, every room was blank and dirty and very quickly you could see the change in each room as colour was added. The painting was hard work especially when the children from the school were trying to help!
When we got tired of painting we simply joined in another task that was happening. One of the bigger projects was fitting a water tank and drainage system to the kindergarten school so that when it rained there was a ready-made collection system. At the moment all water has to be carried by the older children from the village to the school, its not far, but we did try carrying a bucket on our heads and it was impossible! I don't know how the other kids can do it. Much better to have a tank I think!
For the tank project we worked with Mr Aggrey, he's a builder from the community, his English was very good and he laughed a lot, at us I think, but he was very good at teaching us how to make concrete blocks for the tank to sit on.
In the evenings we'd either sit around a camp fire and eat dinner or go to a local restaurant, most of the time we prefered the fire as it was such a magical feeling eating and laughing in the warm evening. It got dark very quickly and very early in comparison to England, and as we were all so tired from the days work, it was great!
All in all it was a fantastic trip, it was so obvious we all felt the same because it was such an emotional goodbye!" |
