Childcare

The nursery placement and masterclass programme offers hands-on experience in a nursery class or with the infants and nursery age children at the local orphanage. This can be a challenging programme as African child rearing norms are different to Western practices. It is therefore worthwhile to familiarise college students wishing to embrace this rewarding and truly amazing opportunity with pre-departure African study topics and projects; or ask SCT to come in to talk to the students about the cultural differences and the different approaches to care giving.

Familiarisation with the culture is important with this masterclass programme. We recommend this to enable the students to accept village life and enjoy their immersion in new and somewhat alien situations. Child care is very personal, emotional and emotive. Therefore, acceptance of alternative ways of doing things or awareness that different is not wrong, but simply an unfamiliar way, is crucial for young adults. When young trainees lack a range of practical experience and they have their own cultural beliefs, it can be daunting to be surrounded by new methods of addressing childcare needs. It can lead to stereotypical images and thoughts which can lead to ethnocentric discussions and behaviours. These can manifest in awkward communications and embarrassment in the handling of some situations.

The pre-school and early child care programme in Ghana is developed with the college to specifically meet the interests of the students. The individual trip plan can include as many of the following elements as the Child Care Principal would like.
  • Health Care Introduction from the School Nursing Team
  • Health Care Introduction from the Rural Baby Unit Team
  • Small group community talks with mums about bringing up their children
  • The “‘Queen Mothers'” talk about their alternative orphan care structure
  • Working/visit Nurserys
  • Working/visit Orphanages
  • Observing Nursery Classroom Needs, preparing a needs analysis, making classroom materials
  • Observing Under Two Orphan Care, determining a needs analysis, organising and managing a sustainable plan; implementation of the plan with care givers
