The programme runs particularly well with initial observation, reflection, group discussions, group agreement on
ultural best practice then implementation of that practice. Young participants can then organise themselves into
project teams that best suit their interests, dispositions and empathy for the situation.
The teams then return to their preferred placement, receive further time to observe everyday situations or receive
masterclass instructions, then practically work alongside their Ghanaian aunties and their helpers.
The learning outcomes of the pre-school and nursery masterclass programme are far reaching. Young students will face
situations unfound in most UK institutions. Problems of feeding children; what interventions are available to
undernourished children? How does the orphanage get food for the orphans – can we think and implement additional
avenues that will guarantee more food for the orphanage? Do we need to look at marketing the orphanage to make a
health difference to the children? What could we do, who could be sponsors, how can a sponsor programme be
sustainable? |

What foods do the children eat – what foods don't they eat? Why? What are the health effects of these foods? How
can we implement a good diet plan and how can it be made sustainable?
What health talks do we need to give to the children and their parents or care givers to improve health and hygiene
awareness? How can we make clean water an important everyday health and hygiene issue? Are there songs, dances and
mimes we can teach the children and care givers to focus on regular bathing, washing hands and drinking clean water?
What nursery resources do the children need to encourage motor skills? What resources do they need to encourage
cognitive development? What can we effectively plan and implement and how do we train the caregivers? All these
challenges are rewarding and develop individual and team skills in communication, leadership, delegation,
compromise, planning, sensitivity and cultural etiquette.
The pre-school masterclass programme is unique. It offers a chance of a lifetime to be involved with situations
where caregivers and children really need help and support from sensitive and caring people. Come and you'll
remember your time in Ghana for the rest of your life. |
