African Hairdressing

Next page
A unique cultural experience in Ghana to learn about and build skills in African hairstyling. The hairdressing programme is developed with each college to meet the needs of the students. The tailored programme would include as many or as few of the following elements as the College Hairdressing Principal would like:
  • African hair - growth, care, styles
  • Care regime - shampoo, conditioner, chemicals
  • Extensions - thick and thin
  • Styles - long, bob, children’s
  • Braiding techniques
  • Setting hair - straigtening and shaving
  • Wigs
The hairdressing experience is based around one hair salon in Ghana, where the owner will deliver a masterclass on each specific aspect or styling technique. UK students will watch the masterclass, ask questions and take notes which they will use later as they practice what they have seen. Once the demonstration has taken place, students will be assigned a Ghanaian junior/trainee who they will shadow. After the junior/trainee has completed a demonstration the UK student will practice on their own model with the guidance of both their own Ghanaian peer and the Salon Owner.
