African Hairdressing

Working with Ghanaian people in their homeland will provide a rich cultural experience and develop greater
understanding of their life, values, expectations, norms and rituals. An important element of hairdressing
is the ability to ‘small talk’ with customers whilst providing a relaxed and comfortable environment where
they feel confident that they will receive excellent haircare and personal service. The opportunity to work
in a Ghanaian hair salon will show students what similarities and differences there are in cultural communication
and customer service. What are safe subjects to talk about? Do Ghanaians talk about the weather? What are taboo
subjects? Is is rude and indiscreet to talk about friends who are not present? What are customers worries and
concerns; are they the same or similar to people’s worries at home in the UK?
A varied and interesting hairdressing skill building itinery will be developed to enhance UK students
knowledge of African hair and culture. If a college would like their students to complete project portfolio’s
this can be incorporated into the programme, with time made available for students to conduct surveys, take
photographs and shop for products. |
