Using the post to exchange letters between pupils or teachers, or between whole
classes or schools.
Main benefits:
- Personal contact brings the partnership alive, enhances motivation and helps develop communication and presentation skills
- It is an invaluable tool for teachers in partner schools to keep in contact whilst managing the project
- It can build up empathy and sympathetic relationships.
Issues to consider:
- There may be unreliable and slow postal services in some countries. Time delays can lead to a petering out of interest
- Teachers will need to monitor the correspondence between pupils to ensure that cultural, social and economic differences are respected
- Postal costs may be a deterrent to schools in some countries
- Class sizes differ widely, which may favour group-to-group over individual-to-individual links. It is not necessarily essential to match pupils one-to-one. By working in groups on letters disappointment is avoided in the case of partner pupils leaving or being away from school
- Schools may have different expectations. UK school children may become disinterested if they do not receive an immediate reply to the subject of their letter; their partners may well reply in-depth after some time has lapsed.
